Creative Spiritual Insights: Hyperbole
Is there anything too hard for God? Of course not! Yet we act as though there are things that are too difficult for him! All the more we also act as though the things that God wants for us no matter how small or great are of no matter whatsoever. Think about it. Is there anything so small that you would feel like it’s for someone else to do? That it would somehow be beneath you to do it? Is there anything that would be too “dirty” or “unclean” for you to do, like picking up trash for someone or hanging out with “sinners”?
What about the flip side of that? Is there anything so big that you feel there’s no way God could use you for that task or job? Is there something that God is calling you to or to do that you would feel someone else would be more qualified or equipped to do? Maybe you are the prime candidate and yet you refuse to do what God has gifted and called you to do because you can’t get beyond yourself and perceived limitations.
Is there anything too small? Is there anything too big? For you?
What kinds of things would you be willing to “settle for”?
What kinds of things has God called you to or to do?
How can God work even through your own limitations?
How has God equipped you for the task at hand?
Who will get the glory if you do the task?
Who or what will suffer if you refuse?
6 he says:
“It is too small a thing for you to be my servant
to restore the tribes of Jacob
and bring back those of Israel I have kept.
I will also make you a light for the Gentiles,
that my salvation may reach to the ends of the earth.”
The one who calls you is faithful, and he will do it.
1 Thessalonians 5:24
10 For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.
26 Those who heard this asked, “Who then can be saved?”
27 Jesus replied, “What is impossible with man is possible with God.”
28 Peter said to him, “We have left all we had to follow you!”
29 “Truly I tell you,” Jesus said to them, “no one who has left home or wife or brothers or sisters or parents or children for the sake of the kingdom of God 30 will fail to receive many times as much in this age, and in the age to come eternal life.” Luke 18:26-29
Maybe God is calling you to do the smallest or the greatest of things. That is not the point. The point is that the One who is calling you is able…and there’s no hyperbole in any description of Him!
1 Clap your hands, all you nations;
shout to God with cries of joy.
2 For the LORD Most High is awesome,
the great King over all the earth.
3 He subdued nations under us,
peoples under our feet.
4 He chose our inheritance for us,
the pride of Jacob, whom he loved.
5 God has ascended amid shouts of joy,
the LORD amid the sounding of trumpets.
6 Sing praises to God, sing praises;
sing praises to our King, sing praises.
7 For God is the King of all the earth;
sing to him a psalm of praise.
8 God reigns over the nations;
God is seated on his holy throne.
9 The nobles of the nations assemble
as the people of the God of Abraham,
for the kings of the earth belong to God;
he is greatly exalted.
