Expect the unexpected. He wasn’t looking for God nor was He expecting God and yet once his eyes were opened he saw God was there the whole time. This is the story of Jacob, the deceiver. His whole life he had learned to specialize in wording things just right as to get what he wanted. He had become a great swindler and a master at disguise and manipulation. Yet, here he was now being ambushed by God.
16 When Jacob awoke from his sleep, he thought, “Surely the LORD is in this place, and I was not aware of it.” 17 He was afraid and said, “How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God; this is the gate of heaven.” Genesis 28:16-17
Jacob left looking for a wife and found God instead. Actually God found him in this place. Our travels, our searching, our longings can take us to some places we were not intending to go and they can lead us to finding things we were certainly not looking for. To find something one wasn’t looking for is known as “serendipity”. Living a life of faith certainly means that we should always expect the unexpected and allow God the freedom to reveal and show Himself to us in new and fresh ways. “Unearthing” the unexpected can change our life forever and lead to fulfilling the passion and longing inside us that was intended by God.
